About this tool
A QR code is a picture that holds a short piece of text inside a grid of black and white squares. Point a phone camera at it and the text is read back, which is why it is most often used to save people from typing a web address by hand. Enter a link or any text here and the code is drawn on the spot, ready to download as a PNG.
The Wi-Fi tab does something a little different. Give it the network name, the password and the security type, and it produces a code that carries those credentials — a guest who scans it is connected without anyone reading a password aloud. It works well on a sign by the door of a shop, an office or a guest room. Tick the hidden network box if the network does not broadcast its name.
The read tab works the other way round: pick an image containing a QR code and its contents are decoded into text. Phone cameras already read QR codes, so this is for the cases they cannot reach — a code you screenshotted or were sent as a picture. Decoded addresses are deliberately not turned into links, because codes from unknown sources are a common phishing route and reading the address before you act on it is the safer habit.
Error correction controls how much redundant data is packed in so the code still reads when it is scratched or partly covered. Level L survives roughly 7% damage and level H roughly 30%, but the higher the level the less text fits. Raise it for anything printed, and lower it if your content is long and the code will not generate. Everything is drawn in your browser, so the address or Wi-Fi password you type never reaches a server.
