This shows how many public holidays fall in the current year and how long there is until the next one. Change the year and you can look back or ahead, which makes it useful when planning leave around long weekends.
Some Korean public holidays fall on fixed dates — Independence Movement Day, Liberation Day, National Foundation Day — while others follow the lunar calendar, including Seollal, Chuseok and Buddha’s Birthday. The lunar ones land on a different solar date each year, so they are computed from lunar calendar data. Substitute holidays are worked out from the rules and included in the list as well.
Two kinds of holiday cannot be computed. Temporary public holidays and election days are designated by the government as and when, so they cannot be known in advance and only those already announced appear here. Substitute holidays are calculated by applying the current rules to every year, so for past years — when the rules were different — the list may not match the holidays that were actually observed.
